Golden Retrievers

Marsh and River Adventures

2008_0525DogsHousy0527080022.jpg

Barb and I are busy with Riley and Emma’s heats/breedings this week. So I thought to digress and show some collected photos of Sandy and Maggie, former puppies here who live with my cousin Ron and his Barbara. They take their dogs to woodlands, lakes, oceans, and rivers. True adventures compared to our little outings to the local high school.

I’ve thought of bringing our group to one of the many shallow streams that meander through the woods in Vermont. But with five, if even one sees something and sounds the hunt alert, I could lose all five. Not worth the risk. So we will continue to live the big time adventures through Ron’s dogs.

These photos were taken just a week ago…

Home again, Maggie rests at Ron’s feet literally. Notice her green paws from the river bed algae.

An adventure truly enjoyed. Thanks for the photos Ron and Barb!

Now back here in Dogville, Berna of Pebwin Goldens reports that our Riley had a successful tie with Mulder on Saturday night. She relayed the story that just as the dogs were introduced, they lost power. Not to be deterred, they brought out some candles and flashlights and the union occurred. And who said romance was dead..

Emma’s progesterone levels are starting to rise, so we expect to bring her and Mulder to our special vet by the end of this week.

A Time to Plant, A Time to Breed

TimetoPlant9.jpgTimetoPlant8.jpg

What an amazing Memorial Day Weekend we were blessed with. Perfect New England weather, and just right for planting our yearly flower purchases. The girls were more of a hindrance than help as usual. Lucy, our youngest golden, had to taste every pot, some of which hadn’t yet been emptied.

TimetoPlant6.jpgTimetoPlant7.jpg

The rest of the dogs were distracted by a chipmunk that stole its way into the shed for birdseed. Though they made a lot of noise and bluster, the little critter found its way safely home.

TimetoPlant24.jpgTimetoPlant25.jpg

Goldens are very well suited for just watching you work. Their expressions here are a little somber, because I knew they wanted to go for a run. This day I had to save my energy for planting, and so we all stayed home.

TimetoPlant15.jpgTimetoPlant10.jpgTimetoPlant20.jpg

TimetoPlant16.jpgTimetoPlant17.jpgTimetoPlant13.jpg

They do look like they are pouting though, don’t they!

We haven’t had our pool plastered yet with all the debris and pollen still coming down from the trees. Riley treats the small amount of dirty water there as her bathtub, and you can tell by her smile she is having a good time mostly wading.

Now at last to some breeding news!

Riley started her heat several days ago, and lo and behold, Emma decided to follow suit! So we are very busy planning a natural breeding at the Cape with Riley to our favorite champion, Mulder. We have already started doing Riley’s progesterone levels to determine the proper time. Emma will need a surgical insemination and so we will be doing her progesterone levels in conjunction with the infertility vet. A busy week for Barbara in planning and ferrying Riley and Emma various places.

Here is a photo of Riley after breakfast this prior week. Truly a very laid back personality literally.

So we end this holiday weekend with our spirits full of hope and anticipation. I found this bird’s nest next to our back door today.

TimetoPlant28.jpg

We have had a beautiful pair of Baltimore Orioles flying around, and I now see why. We won’t count our eggs before they hatch, but with such beautiful weather, and now new life growing by our doorstep, we are getting excited about having puppies around this summer. Will keep everyone informed!

Reflections

Recently, Barb and I have received some very moving email letters from clients, readers of our blog, and just plain golden lovers. I thought that their comments were worth sharing with everyone. They deal with love and loss and living in the moment.

From Bob:

Rustie100.jpg

“I hope all is well with the Bourque Family. It’s been almost one year since I took Rusty home. Rusty is doing well and we love him dearly. My dad was battling cancer and was very sick most of the year. Frequently, I would take Rusty to my parent’s home to spend the day. My dad always looked forward to Rusty’s arrival. Whenever I would show up at my parents to visit and Rusty wasn’t with me, the first thing my dad would say was ‘Where’s Rusty.’ He loved to play with Rusty and Rusty loved being with my dad. Whenever Rusty went to my parent’s, as soon as he was inside, he would run to find my dad. My dad passed away in October. The time Rusty spent with my dad brought him great joy and helped ease his suffering. For that I am eternally grateful. You bring joy and peace into many people’s lives, more than you know, through your Goldens. God bless you!”

From Ken:

Holly.jpg

“Your latest blog about Holly touched me in a special way. (See “A Family Grieves“). Mary Ann and I and our kids all appreciate the time you spent assembling such a lovely tribute to Holly. Being the loss of our very first dog, we were all unprepared for how much of an impact it would have on all of us. At the same time I could never have anticipated the outreach we have received from fellow pet owners like yourselves. Just tonight our neighbors brought a bundle of homemade cookies (human ones shaped as dog bones)! and a card. Only now will I be able to truly understand what another person is experiencing when they say goodbye to their pet. Even after a week it is still strange preparing only one bowl of food, or loading only one dog into the car. As much as I know that Goldens thrive on human companionship, Rosie and Holly have shown us how important canine companionship is to them as well. We are going to be very careful to find a good match for Miss Purple! Again, thank you for that wonderful surprise on your blog… and for being such caring friends.”

From Michele,

“Hello, I love your website, it is so nicely done.. but of course it is your Goldens that really caught my eye. They are so beautiful. My husband and I recently lost our golden and I had no idea how quiet and empty the house would seem without her. She was medium sized, about sixty pounds, but her heart filled this whole house, and we miss her. We would like to get another puppy, not right away, but sometime in the future. From your website, I could see that your love for the dogs is the reason you have them.”

From Molly:

MollyMaggie1.jpg

“Dear friends, I am writing to let you know that we put our dear, beloved Golden, Maggie to sleep last night. Her cancer returned recently and she became very sick very quickly. She would have been 12 on June 30th. She was a remarkable dog for our family, so full of love an compassion. She was also a miracle dog, surviving two rounds of cancer and living with epilepsy. She just kept rebounding. Her passing was incredibly peaceful. I held her head in my arms and told her how loved she was, and when it was over the bells in the West Congregational Church next door to the vets chimed.”

MollyMaggie2.jpg

“I picked up Maggie’s ashes today at Animal General. BOY THAT WAS HARD!! What really hit me like a ton of bricks was the paw print they did of Maggie after she died, set in a circle of plaster. I wasn’t expecting it and seeing it released the flood gates. I’ll treasure it. I’ve therefore spent many moments today remembering even more things about Mags. We wanted to thank you for the beautiful card you sent us after our Maggie died. We miss her so much, but are enjoying knowing we had her for almost 12 years, against so many odds.

From Yalda,

“I am not a former client of yours, but I hope you don’t mind if I still drop you a note to say how much I appreciate the wonderful work you are doing. I recently moved away from home (and consequently, from my precious Golden named Lucy), and I was looking at pictures of golden retrievers online (just having a nostalgic moment) and I ran across your website. I must say it thrills me to see such caring breeders who are devoted to the health and happiness of their dogs. And your close relationships to your clients is truly amazing. I am a young attorney who works unbelievable hours, so I am not a good candidate for having a golden retriever at this point in my life. But when I have children someday, a golden is a must! I cannot wait to watch them grow side by side, as you watch your goldens grow up alongside the neighborhood children.”

“Please, please keep up the great work! You are adding an invaluable amount of love to so many families. I really feel that you don’t know love until you have seen it in the face of a golden retriever smiling up at you. Thank you for the opportunity to send you a message.”

It has been said that we cannot know the time or manner of our death. But we can choose how to live. Golden Retrievers as a breed have somehow incorporated that essence of living into their DNA structure. Would that we as the supposed more advanced civilization had gotten that right. I will leave you with two photos that my friend Cindy recently sent of her Katie and cat. They give living testimony to the blessings and love a Golden brings to your life.

Naptime Poses

NappingPoses2.jpg

Napping is one of those restorative moments that is best shared with your dog(s). With five here, I have to rotate who is going to cuddle closest with me on the bed. The others then find their place around me.

And of course, I can’t always nap when they do, but I jealously look over and see what I should be doing with them, instead of whatever chore has me at the desk or in the kitchen.

NappingPoses3.jpg

Lucy, our youngest, has her favorite chair by the window. She alerts us by barking if anyone approaches our home. When the area is secure, she nods off until some other noise rouses her again.

NappingPoses1.jpg

Barb and I keep hoping for the start of Emma or Riley’s heat, but there has been no sign of that in either one yet. They just live in the moment and are always content, even if it is just another nap on the day’s agenda.

Pool Work

This morning the rain returned after a several week hiatus. Though this rain is much needed, the prior sunny weather allowed us to get a jump on the outside yard work. We are having major renovations to our pool after 13 years of service. The dogs and I have found the ongoing work to be very interesting.

PoolWork1.jpgPoolWork3.jpgPoolWork2.jpg

Though a pool is not as costly as a boat to maintain, it still is a sinkhole of expenses from chemicals to electricity to hours of maintenance work. We are now awaiting the proper time to re-plaster with the final coat. In between the rain and the debris falling from the trees, we need a few more sunny days, with no pollen to stain the white plaster. A very difficult task to figure with the fickle weather here in New England.

Still the pool has kept the girls’ interest while they try to figure out where the water went.

PoolWork6.jpgPoolWork4.jpgPoolWork5.jpg

This long weekend Barb traveled to Maryland with our son Brian to visit our two grandsons Ethan and Alex, and their parents, Mike and Emma. She took the camera, so I couldn’t get any more Golden pictures to liven this blog.

Here are Ethan and Alex, already rugged boys.

MarylandVisit1.jpg

Barbara left me with strict instructions in keeping the house clean, and keeping our 20 year old cat in good health. She usually vacuums at least daily here.

I found that being a guy and all, the floors looked pretty good just the way they were at the end of the day. It is amazing how blond dog hair will show up all over your clothes, but on the floor it is nearly invisible. I also discovered a secret about floor fur balls. They start out small, but overnight, they breed and attract any other dog hair in the area. Must be through static electricity or something. So in the morning, I just picked up these tumbleweed sized fluff balls resembling cotton candy, and didn’t need to get out the vacuum at all. Now Barb is home, and has already chastened me on the condition of the floors. I just think her eyes are much sharper than mine…
